ARTIST'S STATEMENT, 2011
My porcelain and stoneware pieces are hand-built, or they are cast,
then carved, using simple molds of my own design. These pieces are
one-of-a-kind. Custom tile mural design is a specialty, and I’m now
creating a line of limited series artisan tiles in “pre-set” colorways
(these complement the one of a kind pieces and murals.)
I aim for a balanced tension between the rugged and refined,
sometimes incorporating paper into porcelain to make translucent, torn
edged, paper thin sheets.
My painterly approach to glazing is unusual, and presents unique
challenges with outcomes like no other. To work in clay, one layers
aspects of technical-chemical balancing, then adds in fire and self. It’s
pure alchemy, ceramics!
My Work Reflects Five Core Themes:
I. OF WATERS … Humbled by water's awesome beauty, I live in a land
of Rivers and Sea, of Salmon and Abalone. Fluidity, change, the life
giving magic and fleeting, light reflective wonders of this perfect realm
are my never ending inspiration.
II. OF AIR …Kindled by love for those who fly... Birds, Feathers, and
Winged Friends.
III. OF PATTERN …Pattern is a unique aspect of the Earth, one that
intrigues and inspires. My work often reflects fascination with pattern
and rhythm, and the beauty these create for our planet.
IV. VESSELS …Vases, bowls, and containers~ handbuilt, mainly slab
or coil construction in porcelain and white stoneware. Painterly glazed
designs, some carved... inspired by pattern, colors, and the natural
world.
V. TILE, COLORFIELDS …Handmade Artisan Tiles ~ Color
Explorations in Tile suitable for installation indoors or out. Some are
mounted as completed wall designs, then grouted. Others are ready to
be customized to your specific application.
